Lichthaus

Watamu, Kenya

Overview

Lichthaus is assembled rather than built — mangrove poles, thatch, netting and driftwood, with sand underfoot and the creek running past the deck. The brief was to photograph it as a place that works, not a set: the grill actually lit, the tables actually occupied, the boats moving on the water behind.

The set runs from the entrance arch through the lounges and walkways to the food itself, so the room and what comes out of its kitchen read as one thing.

The driftwood entrance arch under a bright sky
A cook turning seafood on a charcoal grill suspended from chains
The timber deck running out over the creek, tables and floor cushions
Grilled octopus and skewers over the coals
Two guests at a low table on the deck, the creek behind them
Sweet potato fries served in carved wooden bowls
A thatched lounge with planted palms and sand underfoot
The boardwalk running between thatched structures
Boats moored on the creek, seen from the deck
